Melexis Launches Fourth-Generation Automotive LIN Motor Driver MLX81350, Driving Innovation in EV Thermal Management

Tessenderlo, Ham, Belgium – November 7, 2025 – Global microelectronics engineering company Melexis today announced the launch of the MLX81350, its fourth-generation 0.5A LIN motor driver. Delivering up to 5W of output power, the new driver is designed for HVAC flaps and automatic ventilation systems in electric vehicles (EVs), offering a cost-effective solution for silent, efficient motor operation while simplifying system integration.

As EV technology advances, precise control of in-cabin airflow and temperature becomes crucial for enhancing passenger comfort and optimizing energy efficiency. With modern EVs incorporating more flap motors and electronic vents, engineers face the challenge of ensuring reliable, quiet operation, seamless integration, and cost control.

The MLX81350, built on high-voltage SOI technology, integrates flash programmability, high reliability, and functional density into a true single-chip solution. It fully complies with LIN 2.x/SAE J2602 and ISO 17987-4 standards for seamless in-vehicle network communication.

Key software enhancements include improved stall detection and the addition of sensorless Field Oriented Control (FOC), enabling smoother motor operation, reduced current consumption, and lower acoustic noise. The driver maintains pin-to-pin compatibility with its predecessor, facilitating easy design migration.

The IC features comprehensive protection and diagnostic functions—including over-current, over-voltage, and thermal shutdown—ensuring safe and reliable operation in harsh automotive environments. Developed according to ASIL B (ISO 26262), it supports flexible wake-up via LIN, an external pin, or an internal timer, and features low standby current consumption.

Its integrated voltage regulator allows direct operation from a 12V battery, supporting an operating voltage range from 5.5V to 28V. A rich set of peripherals supports advanced motor control and system integration.
